Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a kid. She worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt the space she required during her day time to enjoy the pleasures of literature, art, and theatre. DuVernay was captivated by the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt introduced it to DuVernay. DuVernay saw how art was a powerful tool to promote social activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother, who was a social sassy and encouraged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. Even though DuVernay lived in Compton with her parents, she was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. Following graduation, she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay began producing for broadcast journalism while she was in her college. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to monitor and investigate the residence for a specific member of the Jury. The duties she was required to complete left her unhappy which is why, when she decided to not pursue journalism, she shifted to the field of public relations. DuVernay started her career as a junior public relations assistant in a tiny film studio, right after graduating from the college. In 1999, she founded her own firm that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, her agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
